Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about pricing, insurance, scheduling and how we work. If yours is not here, call us — we do not mind the question.
Quotes & pricing
Almost never over the phone, and that is deliberate. Two lawns of the same size can differ by hours once you factor in slope, access, gate width and what has to be hauled out. The same goes for a tree: height, lean, proximity to the house and power lines all change the job. We come out, look at it and give you a written price. The visit is free.
Yes to the first, no to the second. We look at the work, explain what we would do and leave you a written figure. If you decide not to go ahead, that is the end of it — there is nothing to sign and nobody will chase you.
Not unless the scope changes. The quote covers what we agreed in writing. If something genuinely unexpected turns up — rot behind a wall, a buried slab, a stump twice the size it looked — we stop and talk to you before doing anything that costs more. You will never find out about an extra on the final invoice.
Not if we can reach the work — an unlocked gate is usually enough and we can send the quote afterwards. That said, meeting in person is better. Most people have preferences about what stays, what goes and how much gets cut back, and five minutes on site saves a lot of back-and-forth.
Trees & landscaping
Some warning signs you can spot yourself: a sudden lean, cracks in the trunk, mushrooms growing at the base, hollow or soft wood, large dead limbs, or soil lifting on one side of the root plate. Any of those is worth a look. Trees also fail without obvious symptoms, so if a large one stands over your house, driveway or a neighbour’s property, an inspection is cheap next to the alternative.
Only if you ask for it — stump work is priced separately because not everyone wants it. We can grind it below grade so you can turf or pave over the top, or fully extract it if you are planting something new in the same spot.
Weekly through the growing season and every other week at the shoulders is what suits most lawns in this area. The principle that matters more than the interval: never take off more than about a third of the blade in one cut. Grass cut regularly at the right height grows thick enough to crowd out weeds on its own.
Spring is the common choice, once the ground has warmed. Autumn works well too and gives roots some insulation over winter. Two to three inches is the sweet spot — more than that can suffocate roots, and it should never be piled against trunks or stems.
Demolition & debris
Because interiors are full of things you are keeping. Working by hand lets us take out exactly what the plan calls for and leave the adjoining floors, walls and ceilings intact. It also means less dust, less noise and far less repair work afterwards — which usually makes it the cheaper route once the whole job is added up.
Regularly. We seal the work area, protect floors and walkways, control dust and schedule the noisiest work around your hours. Occupied homes, tenanted units and businesses that need to stay open are normal for us.
Yes — loading, hauling and disposal are included in demolition and junk removal quotes unless we tell you otherwise. You will not be left with a pile in the driveway. Anything still usable gets donated and we recycle what we can rather than sending it all to landfill.
It depends on the jurisdiction and the work. Cosmetic interior strip-outs usually do not; anything structural, or touching plumbing and electrical, often does. Tell us what you are planning and we will tell you straight whether a permit is likely and what the process looks like in your county.
Working with us
Because this work carries real risk. If an uninsured crew drops a limb through your roof or someone is hurt on your property, that can land on your homeowner policy — or on you. Liability insurance means the damage is covered by us, not by you. We are fully licensed and insured and will show you the certificates any time you ask. Ask every contractor you consider for the same.
Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC — including Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Frederick, Hyattsville, College Park, Bowie, Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, McLean and Fairfax. If you are just outside that list, call anyway; we often can.
For urgent work, yes. Storm damage, a tree on a roof, a burst pipe that needs walls opened, or snow that has to be cleared before morning — those calls get answered whenever they come in. Routine quotes and scheduled work happen during normal hours.
Sí. Atendemos en español o en inglés, por teléfono, WhatsApp o correo — lo que le resulte más cómodo. Yes, we work in both English and Spanish.
Call, send a WhatsApp or fill in the quote form. We usually respond the same day and can often visit within a day or two. Small jobs frequently get done the same week; larger projects and snow contracts get scheduled in advance. Emergencies jump the queue.

One of our arborists’ primary tasks at Green Shadow Tree Service is hazard assessment.
As trees age, they are subjected to a range of pressures that may jeopardize their structural integrity. A competent arborist should assess your outdoor living space and advise you on any potential tree collapse concerns.
